Food and Money Basics - ADULTS

Food and Money Basics (FMB) is an adult learning curriculum based on the USDA Guidelines for Americans and Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The FMB class series is developed for single adults and kupuna throughout Hawaiʻi. The class series is made up of the following lessons: A Food Guide, Safe Food Handling, Spending Less Eating Better, Rethink Your Drink, Balancing Act, and Microwave Cooking. Each class includes physical activity demonstrations, a tasting of locally grown fruit and/or vegetables, and may be accompanied by an optional food demonstration where educators show participants how to prepare healthy budget friendly meals at home. Classes are taught by our SNAP-Ed Nutrition Educators who understand the unique challenges affecting our populations in Hawaiʻi.

Testimonials

(I learned) how to make your EBT benefits stretch. Example: if you’re gonna bake chicken with vegetables as a side dish, that is one meal. The next day you can take the leftover chicken cut it up. Mix some pasta in it and a sauce and you got meal number two. If you still have leftover chicken, boil the bones strain out the bones and make chicken soup meal number three. Those suggestions that has really helped me to be able to eat healthy throughout the month. I have a better understanding of what vegetables are better to eat with high nutritional content, example sweet potato over white potato.

I’m elderly and with some health issues. I liked Lianne’s ability to help people of various levels to live well - balanced local lifestyle with healthy living. She is not intimidating; she encourages striving for quality living. I did not know you could use EBT to purchase food producing seeds and planting supplies or food producing plants at the store. I think this is a great opportunity to teach households how to stretch their food budget, push themselves to create new recipes and inspire children to be responsible in a new way. I am a better shopper - look at ingredients. I Incorporate fresh island items into my meals. Also, I now try to “move” to stay fit. Also, I don’t leave my meals out in the car or counter for long periods.

(I am now) understanding the listed product's nutrition and calories facts. Didn't know that the percentages listed applies to just per serving and not to the entire product. (I) reduced my food intake and increased my exercise schedule. Also, the recipes that were handed out are very useful and easy to prepare for fast daily lifestyle.

(I am now) making better food choices and have learned how to keep my weight down. (I now) understand nutrition facts label that have prevented me from getting diabetes.

This program provided valuable information that I was not previously aware of. Important aspect included reading nutritional labels and the ability to convert grams into tablespoon servings. (I also am) understanding nutritional habits and good food safety concerns.

Learning how to incorporate food like beans into my meals in a healthy & delicious way. I have an easier time incorporating vegetables into my diet & for my family.

(I learned about) reading the nutritional facts label. Especially understandig the % of the Daily Value, I'm able to choose healthier products to help bring down my cholesterol and blood pressure. Heading to a healthier me. Another thing I learned is budgeting. I now have extra money for other important things like medical expenses.

One thing that really stood out to me was the amount of time and information the program has given to individuals with developmental disabilities. Participants were able to learn how to make simple foods independently.

Being in a senior rental building was most appreciated and I hope the Nutrition Educator will also help other senior citizens elsewhere. I was most thankful they picked our building… so lucky!
