HNC Food Skills Cookbook

Simple and healthy local meals that don’t break the bank

With favorite recipes from our original cookbook plus many new dishes featuring local produce, we’re excited to introduce the HNC Food Skills Cookbook! This cookbook is perfect for beginners or anyone looking for a refresher on USDA MyPlate, Safe Food Handling Guidelines, Storage, and Thawing.

In the Food Basics section, you’ll also find helpful information on how to buy, store, and prepare many of the ingredients used in our recipes. Ever wanted to try a recipe but weren’t sure what an ingredient looked like or what counts as a “medium” size in a produce list? Our Food Photo Glossary and Produce Size Reference Guide have you covered.

To build your kitchen confidence, we’ve included explanations of Basic Cooking Terms, photos of simple equipment in Kitchen Essentials, and tips for accurately Measuring Liquid and Dry Ingredients.

Each recipe page highlights the approximate preparation time, number of servings and serving sizes (usually in cups), and whether the recipe meets the American Heart Association’s Heart-Check Recipe Certification Program Nutrition Requirements for low fat and/or low sodium. There is also a Nutrition Facts label and a plate diagram to show the primary food groups in each recipe.
